God who holds the future gives peace during the storm.
What things have you been able to do to help you find hope during difficult and challenging times?
Have someone read Acts 16:16-24.
Considering Paul’s motive for freeing the slave girl from spiritual oppression; why do you think the owners allowed her to follow the missionaries around?
With verse 20-21 in mind, how could culture and racial discrimination have played a role in the punishment of Paul and Silas?
The owners of the slave girl were threatened by their financial loss more than the message of Paul and Silas. What other barriers have you witnessed that prevent people from embracing the truth of Christianity?
The missionaries were bold in their proclamation of the gospel message. What reaction or potential punishment prevents Christians today from speaking up about the truth of Jesus?
HOPE IN THE STORM
Have someone read Acts 16:25-40.
The missionaries still trusted God’s plan after being wrongfully humiliated, beaten, and jailed. In the midst of adversity, how can we respond more like Paul and Silas? What would be required of us?
Paul and Silas’ response and actions had a dramatic impact on the jailer and the other prisoners. Share with the group how you have seen similar acts of faith positively influence others.
Being a Roman citizen prevented the open beating and imprisonment without a trial. Why do you think Paul and Silas chose not to inform the magistrate of their citizenship until after they were released?
What attitudes and character qualities does this story challenge you to seek after? How would your life be different as a result of implementing those qualities?
When the storm rages around us, can we find hope in the eternal God that Jesus points us to? What can you do this week to seek and trust God more in the middle of the storm?
Thank you God for the story of hope in the middle of the storm. Please help us to have a stronger trust that you hold the future and give peace in the present . Help us to see you working and comforting when we encounter difficult and challenging times. Amen!
